Site of veterans center listed for sale

The goal of helping area veterans appears to have shifted to making a large profit.

A sign at the former Winnebago school touting an academy for those who served in the military has been removed.

Garth Carlson, the owner of Veterans Enterprises Inc., has hired Coldwell Banker Realty to find a buyer for the facility.

In 2020, Carlson purchased the school from the city for $61,000. Now, the buildings and property located at 132 1st Ave. S.E. are on the market for an asking price of $489,000.

On the real estate company’s website, the facilities are described as being 35,000 square feet located on nearly four acres.

The school features a gymnasium, a computer center, a commercial kitchen and several large classrooms. And, a playground and baseball field are located nearby.

The school would be great for an educational institution, a community center or could even be developed into a residential space for a remarkable place to live,” Realtor Mike Wilen tells a Twin Cities television station.

Uses of the building are listed as commercial, event space, office, professional services and storage facility.

Veterans Enterprises intended to provide transitional housing, educational training and health care services for former armed service members living in southern Minnesota. The school could also be used by the public to hold events.

Carlson did not respond to a request for comment.
