Board searching for auditor/treasurer, again

Local News

Since the Faribault County Board decided the auditor/treasurer should be appointed rather than elected by voters, commissioners have had a hard time keeping the position filled.

In May 2024, Kari Jacobson was hired and after nine months on the job the five-member board is searching for a replacement.

An advertisement in a local publication lists qualifications for the position, where applications can be obtained and a March 3 deadline to apply.

The non-union exempt position is full-time and has a salary range of $96,803 to $131,955 per year based on 40 hours a week. A benefits package includes health insurance, vision and dental coverage, a pension plan and employer paid life insurance.

Board chairman Greg Young did not respond to a request for comment on Jacobson’s employment status. Jacobson also was unavailable for comment.

When Darren Esser resigned from the auditor/treasurer’s post in June 2023, commissioners one month later voted 4-1 to make the position one that is appointed by the board.

They hired Amy Sathoff in October 2023, but she did not survive her six-month probationary period and was terminated in March 2024.

The board contracted with Abdo Solutions of Mankato and paid more than $222,000 until Sathoff was hired and two other vacancies in the auditor’s office were filled.

Prior to Jacobson’s hiring, former auditor/treasurer John Thompson was paid nearly $9,000 for “professional services,” mileage and lodging.
