Two area superintendents remain in the running to fill a similar position at Albert Lea Area Schools (ALAS).

Following interviews on Wednesday, the Albert Lea School Board selected two finalists, Blue Earth Area superintendent Mandy Fletcher and Dr. Steven Heil, superintendent of St. James Public Schools.

Three semi-finalists were evaluated on criteria decided by board members and a survey to obtain public input.

Fletcher and Heil are scheduled to be interviewed beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 31 at the Brookside Education Center in Room 109. The interviews are open to the public.

According to the job opening posted on the district’s website, the candidate hired is scheduled to start their duties on July 1.

The starting salary range of $175,000 to $195,000 is negotiable depending on experience.

Fletcher is currently being paid an annual salary of $143,020. A new three-year contract approved by the BEA board in January increases her pay to $153,000 for the 2025-26 school year; $162,000 in the second year; and $166,000 for the final year.
