Investigation of homicide remains ongoing

After more than five months, authorities are “tight-lipped” with details on the homicide of an Albert Lea man last year.

Several law enforcement agencies have been working to determine who killed 54-year-old Miguel Chavez-Lopez, whose body was found in rural Faribault County in November.

The investigation is still in our hands,” says Sheriff Scott Adams. “All outside agencies are cooperating. It is a team effort.”

Assisting county authorities are the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Albert Lea Police Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Department.

Adams says his department has two deputies assigned to the case and have some involvement in the investigation on a daily basis.

We’ve gotten a lot of tips. One tip leads to two and three more,” he says. “I wish we could make an arrest.”

Authorities say that Chavez-Lopez was found dead at a property in rural Wells.

On Nov. 1, the sheriff’s office responded to a 911 call around 11:46 p.m. that there was a body in the 14000 section of 540th Avenue, Walnut Lake Township.

Ramsey County Medical Center officials have confirmed that Chavez-Lopez’s death was a homicide, but no details of how he died have been released.

Adams would not say if Chavez-Lopez was killed in Faribault County or if authorities believe it was elsewhere.

Anyone who may have information regarding the case is asked to contact deputy investigator Chris Albers, at (507) 526-5148, ext. 2133.
