ATF helps local authorities in bomb case

Local News

Another law enforcement agency has joined the investigation of two homemade bombs found Memorial Day weekend in Winnebago.

Police Chief Eric Olson says the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) unit in St. Paul is offering its services.

Although no one has yet been arrested, Olson says investigators remain active on the case.

Currently, we are working on leads and have gotten a few tips, which we are also working on,” he says. “I am unable to share any other information.”

Olson has said he believes the incident was isolated, directed at a certain person and the public wasn’t and isn’t in any danger.

Jill Oliveira of the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says their agency is assisting local authorities but wasn’t willing to share what types of services they are providing.

Olson would not say if the person “targeted” in the incident has been interviewed or where the incendiary devices were found.

Members of the Faribault County Sheriff’s Department and Winnebago Fire Department searched yards throughout the city on foot looking for other explosive devices.

Anyone having any information should contact the Police Department at (507) 893-3218 or the Sheriff’s Department at (507) 526-5148.
